Microsoft's new Copilot Cowork incentive: what CSP partners need to know

Microsoft launched the Copilot Cowork CSP Activation Incentive on 1 September 2026. Here is who it is for, how it links to usage-based billing and ASPX, and what to do next.

There's been a lot coming out of Partner Center this month, but one announcement in particular caught our eye, and we wanted to break it down for you.

What's been announced?

On 1 September 2026, Microsoft launched the Copilot Cowork CSP Activation Incentive. Put simply, it's a new way for CSP partners to earn for helping customers adopt and actually use Copilot Cowork.

It sits on top of your existing CSP incentives, so it's an additional earning opportunity rather than a replacement. Microsoft's framing is that partners play a critical role in helping customers get real value from AI, and this incentive rewards that work.

Who's it for?

The incentive is aimed at CSP indirect resellers and direct bill partners. If that's you, it's well worth a look!

Why this matters right now

This isn't a standalone update. A few other September announcements link up with it nicely:

Usage-based billing becomes the default from 2 November 2026

New Microsoft 365 Copilot Business licences bought through CSP will include pay-as-you-go billing by default, with the Azure subscription setup already built in. That means much less billing configuration before customers can start using Copilot Cowork. Microsoft calls out the activation incentive directly here, as early usage creates a natural path to expanded consumption and upsell conversations.

ASPX now surfaces Copilot Cowork usage signals

ASPX is moving from a reporting tool to an action engine, and one of its five FY27 priorities is helping you spot which customers are already getting value from Copilot Cowork. That makes it much easier to focus your time where adoption is picking up.

Taken together, the message from Microsoft is clear: adoption and usage are the priority, and they're making it easier (and more rewarding) for partners to drive both.

What should you do next?

A few practical steps we'd suggest:

  • Read the incentives guide to understand eligibility and how earnings work: aka.ms/coworkactivationbonus
  • Brief your team on the usage-based billing change ahead of 2 November, including the preset monthly limit
  • Log in to ASPX and check the Copilot Opportunities tab to see which customers are showing Cowork usage
  • Build Copilot Cowork into your adoption plans with customers, so usage (and your incentive) grows naturally over time
